Does an llms.txt get you cited?
Mostly, no. Measured across the web, the overwhelming majority of published llms.txt files receive no AI crawler requests at all — around 97% of them get zero — and no major answer engine has committed to reading one. It is a proposed convention that the engines have not adopted.
It costs nothing to publish and it is a tidy index of your own site, so we built the generator and made it free and unlimited. But a tool that implied publishing one would get you into ChatGPT would be selling a result it cannot produce.
What does work
Being mentioned somewhere other than your own site. Branded mentions across the web correlate far more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks do — roughly 0.66 against 0.22 — and on commercial “best X” questions the engines overwhelmingly cite listicles and comparison pages, frequently on small, young domains. Which listicles, specifically, is a question with an answer: it is whatever the engine cited when it answered your buyer’s question.
